There are a number of notable aspects in how Deakin structures its graduate medicine degree and how the undergraduate path flows to it.

Deakin requirements regarding previous degrees

Deakin might not be specific about the degree you need to have studied or which university it comes from, but they are specific about the age of prior degrees and the type of degree. Your undergraduate degree, must be less than 10 years old. You can, however, undertake additional study (1/2 year) and your application may be considered. The exception to this rule are applicants for the Rural Training Scheme who reside in Tier 1 (ie within Deakin’s regional footprint in the Western Victorian Primary Health Network area and classified within it as MM3-MM6/MM2 regional areas around Ballarat). The 10 year rule is waived for these applicants.

Deakin does not accept 2 year Bachelor degrees but does accept accelerated degrees (3 years of study undertaken over 2 years).

Higher degrees matter if you're (degree is) old

As indicated above, if your undergraduate degree is older than 10 years you can undertake additional study and and your application may be considered provided you have completed 1/2 year of tertiary study at Honours or Graduate Diploma level or higher. Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Masters by coursework are counted towards your GPA. Ph D’s are not counted in the GPA but may count in meeting the currency of your qualification.

Deakin bonuses

Deakin provides eligible bonuses for a range of attributes including having studied your Bachelor degree at Deakin, work experience for 2 years, clinical experience for 12 months, financial disadvantage and rural residency. If you claim clinical experience you are not able to also claim the work experience bonus. The additional bonus points are added to your combined GPA/GAMSAT (MCAT) score.

Rural Training Scheme

Deakin’s involvement in rural training is articulated through it’s Rural Training Scheme. This provides 30 places for rural and regional students (with priority given to Tier 1 applicants) and requires the commitment to complete four clinical semesters in rural Victoria during years 3 and 4 of the course. Deakin’s approach is to recruit 50% of its medicine students from regional and rural areas. Tier 1 applicants do not have to meet the 10 year rule and do not need to undertake the GAMSAT. The Commonwealth Government has also announced an additional 30 medical students will be funded in Ararat and Warrnambool (with development of these programs to commence in 2024).
