The Monash University medicine degree offers either the option of progressing directly from school into the undergraduate medicine degree or entering as a graduate. All Monash students complete the same medicine degree but commence at different stages.

Available paths 

 

There are 6 possible paths to medicine at Monash University:

 

Path 1: Direct Entry 

The medicine program involves undertaking an initial Bachelor of Medical Science degree and then students progress directly into the Doctor of Medicine degree (subject, of course, to successful completion of the Bachelor of Medical Science degree). 

There are a number of prerequisite subjects for the Bachelor of Medical Science degree - English and Chemistry and these need to have been completed no more than 2 years prior to commencing the Bachelor degree. Students who have not undertaken Year 12 Biology (it's not a prerequisite) can simply undertake a bridging program.

Importantly, to qualify for direct entry you must not have commenced any other tertiary level studies (tertiary studies include Certificate IV level). 

 

In addition to this path, Monash University also provides a number of graduate entry options for the Doctor of Medicine degree.  

Path 2: Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Monash University

Path 3: Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Federation University

Path 4: Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours), Monash University

Path 5: Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours), Monash University

Path 6: Bachelor of Science, Monash University

The Monash degrees that lead to medicine (Paths 2, 4- 6) have substantially different raw ATAR requirements, ranging across these degrees from 72.10 for Bachelor of Science to 91.4 for the Bachelor of Physiotherapy. 

Path 3 is known as the Gippsland Partnership Program and is only available to Gippsland - origin rural applicants.

 

 

How selection works

 

The selection criteria for Monash medicine is different, depending upon whether you are a school leaver (direct entry) or a graduate applying for the Bachelor of Medical Science/Doctor of Medicine degree. 

Direct Entry

Stage 1 Domestic: Your UCAT or your Year 12 results, together with your UCAT scores, are assessed to determine who is offered an interview.

Stage 1 International: Your ISAT results are assessed to determine who is offered an interview.

Stage 2: Your ATAR (33%) is combined with your UCAT/ISAT results (33%) and interview results (33%) to determine who is offered a place. 

 

Graduate Entry

Stage 1:  Students are required to have a weighted average mark of at least 70 to apply for graduate entry to the Monash medical degree. These students are offered the opportunity to sit an interview.

Stage 2: Selection for the offer of a place in the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine degree is made on the basis of your academic performance in your undergraduate degree (40%) plus interview (60%).
